Most people don’t think much about storage until they need it. By that point, they’re already dealing with a move, a renovation, or a space issue.
That’s when small mistakes turn into bigger problems.
One of the biggest things people underestimate is how much space their belongings actually take up. Clutter, especially when it’s not packed properly, takes up significantly more room than organized boxes.
We see people start packing and realize halfway through that they need more space than expected.
Time is another major factor. Loading a container takes longer than people think. When you combine furniture, boxes, and heavier items, the process adds up quickly. If there’s a deadline involved, like a closing date, that can create unnecessary stress.
Another mistake is choosing a solution based only on price.
We’ve seen customers go with an option that looks cheaper upfront, only to realize they’re spending more time and effort than they planned. Driving long distances, making multiple trips, or dealing with limited availability all add hidden costs.
Communication is another issue. Some facilities take days, or even weeks, to respond. We’ve tested this ourselves and found that response times vary widely depending on how you reach out.
That delay can make a time-sensitive situation even harder.
Insurance is another area people overlook. It’s common for customers to assume they don’t need coverage. But having a policy in place gives you an option if something unexpected happens.
There are also simple logistical things that get missed. For example, not accounting for how much space a container needs in a driveway can lead to problems on delivery day. We’ve had situations where there wasn’t enough room, and we had to turn around.
The same goes for pickup. If the container isn’t clear and ready, it delays the process.
Storage doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require some planning.
Before choosing a storage option, take a few extra minutes to think through space, timing, and how you’ll actually use it. It can save you a lot of headaches later.
